Dosage: The usual dose and frequency of administration of doxycycline differ from the dose and frequency of administration of most other tetracyclines. Exceeding the recommended dose may lead to an increase in the frequency of adverse reactions.

Adults and adolescents aged 12 to 18 years

The usual dose of doxycycline for the treatment of acute infections in adults and children aged 12 to 18 years is 200 mg in 1 or 2 doses on the first day of treatment, then 100 mg per day. In severe infections, the drug is prescribed at a dose of 200 mg per day for the entire period of treatment.

Children aged 8 to 12 years

The use of doxycycline for the treatment of acute infections in children aged 8 to 12 years should be carefully evaluated. Doxycycline is used when other drugs are unavailable, ineffective, or contraindicated. In such cases, the following doses are used for the treatment of acute infections:

- Children weighing 45 kg and less: the initial dose is 4 mg/kg in 1 or 2 doses on the first day of treatment, on the following days - 2-2 mg/kg per day in 1 or 2 doses. In case of severe infection, the drug is prescribed at a dose of 4 mg/kg per day for the entire course of treatment.

- Children weighing more than 45 kg: the usual adult dose is prescribed.

If a dose of less than 100 mg is required, another available preparation containing doxycycline should be used.

Children from birth to 8 years of age

Doxycycline should not be used in children under 8 years of age due to the risk of tooth discoloration.

Duration of treatment: Treatment usually lasts 5 to 10 days. The drug should be taken for at least 24-48 hours after the symptoms of fever have resolved.

In beta-hemolytic streptococcal infections, treatment should be continued for at least 10 days to prevent acute arthritis or glomerulonephritis.

Contraindications:

- Hypersensitivity to doxycycline or any of the excipients of the drug;

- Hypersensitivity to other tetracyclines;

- Second and third trimesters of pregnancy;

- Age up to 8 years due to the risk of tooth discoloration.

Pregnancy: Doxycycline is contraindicated in the second and third trimesters of pregnancy.

As a precautionary measure, the use of doxycycline should be avoided during the first trimester of pregnancy.

Lactation: Doxycycline should be avoided during lactation. Tetracyclines are excreted in breast milk; theoretically, teeth discoloration and bone growth retardation may occur in breastfed infants/infants if the mother takes the drug.

Symptoms: Liver damage, accompanied by symptoms such as vomiting, episodes of fever, jaundice, hematomas, melena, azotemia, increased transaminase levels and prolonged prothrombin time.
